Digital marketing in 2026 — the year search changed

In 2026 Google's AI answers went mainstream, most searches ended without a click and ads started appearing inside AI responses. Here's how digital marketing changed this year — and what UK businesses should do about it.

Every year brings new marketing "trends". 2026 was different: the way people find businesses online changed in a way that affects almost everyone who relies on Google. This review looks at what happened, what the data shows, and what it means for UK businesses planning next year.

1. AI answers went mainstream

At I/O in May, Google said AI Mode had passed one billion monthly users roughly a year after launch, with AI Mode queries more than doubling every quarter. AI Overviews — the AI summaries at the top of normal results — reached more than 2.5 billion monthly users, and Google brought AI Overviews and AI Mode together into one experience, with a follow-up path from an Overview into a full conversation.

For searchers, this means more answers without leaving Google. For businesses, it means the results page is now a mixture of AI summaries, ads, maps, products and links — and the classic "ten blue links" are only part of it.

2. Zero-click became the norm

When people get an answer on the results page, they click less. SparkToro's analysis of US search behaviour found that around 68% of Google searches in the first four months of 2026 ended without a click. Different studies measure this differently, but the direction is consistent: informational searches send fewer visitors than they used to.

What this does not mean is that SEO is dead. Searches that show intent — "commercial cleaners in Camden", "Shopify agency London", "warehouse software for food wholesalers" — still lead people to websites, calls and enquiries. What changed is that being chosen and cited matters as much as being ranked.

3. Ads moved into AI answers

At Google Marketing Live, Google announced new ad formats for AI-powered search, including conversational ads and AI-powered Shopping ads, initially tested in the US. Paid search is becoming less about matching keywords and more about giving Google good signals: clear products, strong landing pages, accurate conversion tracking and enough creative for the system to work with.

4. Being cited became a new kind of SEO

Marketers started to talk about "GEO" (generative engine optimisation) or "AI visibility". The fundamentals are familiar, but the emphasis shifted:

  • Clear, specific answers on your pages that an AI summary can quote accurately.
  • Structured data describing your organisation, services, products, prices and FAQs.
  • Evidence of expertise — named authors, real examples, case studies and reviews.
  • Brand mentions across trusted sites, because AI systems draw on what others say about you.
  • Consistency — the same facts about your business everywhere.

5. First-party data and consent mattered more

With fewer clicks and tighter privacy expectations, businesses relied more on data they collect directly — enquiries, customer accounts, email subscribers — with proper consent. In the UK, consent mode, accurate cookie banners and server-side conversion tracking moved from "nice to have" to essential for measuring paid campaigns properly.

6. AI changed how content is made

Most marketing teams now use AI for first drafts, variations and research. The result is a lot more average content. The businesses that stood out did the opposite: original insights, real data, clear opinions and practical detail that a generic AI answer can't offer.

7. Businesses kept adopting AI — carefully

Beyond marketing, the ONS reports that 30% of UK businesses used at least one AI technology in September 2026. Marketing and customer service are among the most common starting points.

What this means for a UK business

  • Don't panic about traffic — measure enquiries. Rankings and visits matter less than calls, forms and sales from search.
  • Fix the basics — fast pages, clear service pages, local SEO and accurate structured data. Our local SEO checklist is a good start.
  • Answer real questions on your own site, in your own words, with your own examples.
  • Invest in your brand — reviews, mentions and reputation feed both people and AI.
  • Get tracking right — consent mode, GA4 events and conversion imports for ads.

Summary

2026 was the year AI answers became part of normal search: AI Mode passed a billion users, most searches ended without a click and ads started appearing inside AI responses. The winners weren't the businesses chasing tricks, but those with clear, trustworthy information, strong reputations and good measurement.
